Who are we in Christ Jesus? What is our identity?
When people look at us, do they see Jesus? When we look at ourselves, do we see Jesus? If someone were to ask you, who are you in Christ Jesus, how would you respond?
Before we answer this question, maybe it would be helpful to know and understand who Jesus is. Let’s see what Jesus says about Himself in His Word. He says:
- I am the bread of life (John 6:35, 41, 48, 51)
- I am the light of the world (John 8:12)
Jesus is our very sustenance. We feed on Jesus by reading and meditating on His Word. Jesus tells us in Matthew 4:4 that people do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. Therefore, we know that the Word of God is vital to protecting our witness and our walk. Ezekiel tells us that we must eat the Word.
The voice said to me, “Son of Man, eat what I am giving you – eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. “Fill your stomach with this,” he said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.
Ezekiel 3:1-3 (emphasis mine)
These verses show us that getting the Word of God into us is not something we can do all in our own strength or capacity. Do you see the words above? Ezekiel opened his mouth but who fed him? The Lord fed him. Just like He will feed us. We need to come before Him hungry and open our mouths wide so that He can feed us. And it will be as sweet as honey.
Start today by asking Him to give you a deep hunger for His Word. Ask Him to feed you.
We are also told in the Gospel of John that Jesus is the Word (John 1:1, 14). Our Bibles are living and breathing in our very hands. The story of Jesus Christ is intertwined throughout the entire Bible from start to finish. The Alpha and the Omega! Jesus is the beginning and the end. He is the Word – the entire Word from Genesis to Revelation.
Therefore, if Jesus is the Word and we are told to get the Word inside of us, we need Jesus inside of us. Is it possible for us to get Jesus inside of us on our own? I don’t think so. This is only something that He is capable of doing. He tells us in John 14:20 that He is in the Father, and we are in Him and He is in us. We are protected so beautifully from the inside out. How does He get inside of us? We ask Him to become our Savior and Master. He will then do the work as we seek His presence. And as He is working in us, He will even give us the desire and the power to do what pleases Him (Philippians 2:13)! He is so good and so true.
Jesus is Love. Jesus is Light.
Jesus is.
The Word goes on to tell us that Jesus is the Light. So we ask ourselves the question we started with, who are we in Jesus?
Who are we in Jesus?
The Word tells us that we are the light (1 Thessalonians 5:5). We are to be like Jesus so that means that we are to be the light that shines in the darkness. Once light penetrates the darkness, darkness does not have the ability to take over. What a wonderful promise for all of us. When we allow the light into our darkness, the darkness goes away!
What Jesus is, we are. We are love. We are light.
Jesus tells us a multitude of other things that He is in His Word. We’ll explore more in future lessons so that we can each grow and learn together who we are in Christ Jesus. It is imperative to our walk that we know the truth that we are His. It is imperative to our witness that we know who we are in Him.
I’d like to end on this word from the Word. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are to love one another. We are to encourage one another. We are to grow together as One in the Body of Christ.
So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Stay in the Light and the Love always,
Eva
