1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
Self-discipline:
- is personal training that develops self-control and character, resulting in an orderly and efficient life
- is essential to godliness
- is essential to our well-being in all areas of our lives – health, relationships, finances, work
I have three teenagers. I thank God each and every day and often multiple times per day for each and every one of my children. They are each so special and loving. God entrusted the basic care of these three precious children to my husband and me. We, in turn, entrust that God takes care of their spiritual well-being. I continually pray for God to protect and watch over these beautiful lives as they begin slowly entering life on their own.
I hope they each have learned patience and self-control. These character traits are so important in life. At times it is difficult for me to discuss intimate topics with my kids. As they start dating, I convince myself that prayer is enough for them to remember the importance of self-control. However, deep down, I know that God expects more from me. I look to the Bible for help. Have you ever heard God’s voice as you read the Bible? Sometimes I just look at a verse and can’t move my focus from it. I just keep reading it. Colossians 4:2 is like that for me tonight. As I worry about my teenager downstairs with his girlfriend, I keep reading this verse.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Isn’t that so appropriate? God never fails to amaze me in how He reaches out to me in just the right way.
I pray for all the moms out there! I beg God to reassure me that things are okay. He tells me even if they are not okay, He’ll be there with me on this wonderful journey.
